Music therapy is the use of interventions to accomplish individual goals within a therapeutic relationship by a professional who has completed an approved music therapy program. Music therapy is an allied health profession and one of the expressive therapies, consisting of a process in which a music therapist uses music and all of its facets – physical, emotional, mental, social, aesthetic, and spiritual – to help patients improve their physical and mental health.
One reason for the effectiveness of music therapy is the capacity of music to affect emotions and social interactions. It is associated with a decrease in depression, improved mood, and a reduction in anxiety. Music therapy may improve quality of life, involvement with the environment, expression of feelings, awareness and responsiveness, positive associations, and socialization. Although not appropriate for all, music therapy may be effective with an otherwise unresponsive patient.
